Mrs. Ollie Gilliam Ragland
July 5, 1951 – May 4, 2018
Ollie Mae Gilliam Ragland, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, departed this life on May 4, 2018 in Meridianville, AL. Ollie was born on July 5, 1951, in Huntsville, AL, to the late Ollie and Ruby Tibbs Gilliam. She was the second child of three siblings, one of whom preceded her in death (Larry). As the only girl, she was affectionately known as Baby Sis. She married Tyrone Ragland in 1985 and they remained married until her death on May 4, 2018. Ollie was a longtime member of Union Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, where she faithfully attended and served until her health began to decline.
Ollie attended William Hooper Councill High School, and went on to graduate from Huntsville High School, Class of 1969. Upon graduation, she attended the North Alabama College of Commerce, earning an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. She was selected for employment at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in 1976. She later enrolled in Calhoun Community College and then on to Athens State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. She retired an experienced and certified Contracting Officer, in 2005.
Her favorite hobbies were supporting her children, spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and reading. Her home was always an open door for her children and their friends, as well as all of the children in her family. She was the epitome of nurturing. Her personal ministry was visiting the sick & shut-in to assist with their personal care, transportation to appointments, grocery shopping, or just to sit and converse. Affectionately known as “Granny”, her priority and purpose was her grandchildren. She was very meticulous and gave great attention to detail. She had a calm and gentle spirit.
She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband, Tyrone Ragland; three loving and devoted children, Stephanie Love, Tyrone E. Ragland, and Tyson Ragland; one stepson, Seneca Montgomery; a brother, Charles Wayne Gilliam; two aunts, Geraldine Brandon of Akron, OH and Wilma Louise Gilliam of Madison, AL; uncles, Percy Lee Gilliam and Virgil Gilliam, Jr. (Leola), all of Madison County, AL; and a host of “children”, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Union Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America (3126 Nevel Drive, Huntsville, AL 35810) with Dr. Edward L. Anderson officiating.
